The BMW R 12 nineT is a new generation of the iconic BMW roadster, designed to embody the spirit of classic motorcycle design while incorporating modern technology and customization options. This 2023 model is part of the BMW Motorrad Heritage family, which celebrates the brand’s rich history and commitment to innovative engineering.
The R 12 nineT boasts a classic roadster design with a focus on dynamic riding on country roads. The aluminum tank with brushed and clear-coated side panels, seat, and tail-hump create a rising, dynamic line. The improved ergonomics compared to its predecessor are mainly due to the 30 mm shorter and narrower fuel tank in the rear area. This design change allows the rider to be closer to the handlebars, benefiting from improved knee contact and a more front-oriented seating position overall.
The R 12 nineT is powered by an air/oil-cooled 2-cylinder boxer engine with a capacity of 1,170 cc. This engine configuration is synonymous with BMW motorcycles and delivers 80 kW (109 hp) at 7,000 rpm and 115 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The engine features a new airbox integrated under the seat and a left-side exhaust system with double silencers and conical end pieces, giving it a sporty and classic look.
The centrepiece of the R 12 nineT is the completely newly developed tubular bridge steel spaceframe. This frame eliminates the need for previous fastenings, reducing weight and giving the bike a cleaner and more classic appearance. The rear frame is bolted to the main frame, and the USD telescopic fork is fully adjustable on the R 12 nineT.
The R 12 nineT features a powerful braking system with radially mounted 4-piston monobloc brake callipers, steel flex brake lines, and floating 310 mm brake discs. This system is complemented by BMW Motorrad ABS Pro for safe braking even when cornering.
The R 12 nineT offers great freedom of choice when it comes to design, model diversity, and customizing. The bike comes with three attractive paintwork options: Base paint finish Blackstorm metallic, Surcharge colour San Remo Green metallic, and Option 719 “Aluminium” in brushed aluminium / Night Black solid paint. Additionally, the bike features standard riding modes “Rain”, “Road”, and “Dynamic”, as well as DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) and engine drag torque control.
The R 12 nineT includes several standard features such as USB-C and 12 V socket, digital display available as optional equipment ex works, and powerful LED light units. Keyless Ride is also standard, allowing riders to start the bike without a key.
The R 12 nineT comes with a 3-year warranty and a starting MSRP of $16,295. The European model shown includes optional equipment and accessories at extra cost.
