The BMW R 1300 GS is a completely redesigned adventure motorcycle. It features a new 1,300 cc boxer twin engine, frame, suspension, and electronics package, making it the most advanced GS model yet.
The liquid-cooled 1,300 cc flat twin engine produces 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and 110 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm, making it the most powerful boxer engine BMW has ever produced. It uses BMW’s ShiftCam variable valve timing system to provide a broad, linear power delivery across the rev range. The engine is paired with a new 6-speed gearbox mounted underneath for a more compact design.
The R 1300 GS has a new steel frame with a bolt-on aluminum subframe that is claimed to be 26 lbs lighter than the previous model. Suspension is handled by BMW’s EVO Telelever front and EVO Paralever rear, with 7.5 inches of travel at both ends. Braking is done by twin 310mm discs with 4-piston calipers up front and a single 285mm disc with a 2-piston caliper at the rear, with BMW Motorrad’s Integral ABS Pro system.
The R 1300 GS comes standard with a 6.5″ TFT display, LED lighting, traction control, hill hold control, cornering ABS, and four riding modes. Optional tech includes radar-assisted cruise control, blind spot detection, front collision warning, and electronic suspension adjustment. The bike also features a new LED headlight with high and low beams in one unit and a cornering function.
The R 1300 GS has a seat height of 33.4 inches, a wheelbase of 59.7 inches, and a curb weight of 522 lbs. It has a fuel capacity of 5.02 gallons and a front tire size of 120/70 R 19 and a rear tire size of 170/60 R 17.
The R 1300 GS is available in base, GS Trophy, Triple Black, and Option 719 Tramuntana models, with prices starting at $18,895 MSRP. The base model is priced at £15,990 in the UK, while the higher-spec TE version starts at £18,465.
